Careers
Traineeships
Outback Pharmacies currently employ more than 45 members of staff, many of which started with the group through traineeships. We offer various traineeships for pharmacy assistants through the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) and The Pharmacy Guild of Australia. These traineeships introduce people to the pharmacy industry and aim to provide you with the knowledge and skills to progress in a challenging and rewarding career in community pharmacy.
Student Programs
Outback Pharmacies, in partnership with the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health (UDRH), host pharmacy students from many universities across Australia and Overseas.
Activities students are involved in are diverse and include many programs that pharmacy students may not have exposure to elsewhere. These programs include visits to the Royal Flying
Doctor Service, Nursing Homes, Hospital Services, remote outlying towns such as Wilcannia and Menindee, Health promotions and work experience within the Outback Pharmacies.
Time spent in the pharmacies is aimed to help develop student’s clinical and practical knowledge within community pharmacy. Students are actively encouraged to be involved in the daily workings of the pharmacy from dispensing, OTC consultations, medication counselling, extemporaneous dispensing and exposure to the many different pharmacy services that Outback Pharmacies provide.

Intern Opportunities
Interns with the Outback Pharmacy Group have the opportunity to learn from a range of specialist pharmacists in areas including pain management, home medication review services, pharmacy academia, health promotion, indigenous health, pharmacy management, commerce and finance.
The Group also works collaboratively with the Royal Flying Doctors Service, Maari Ma Indigenous Health Service, local aged care facilities and the Broken Hill Department of Rural Health, providing interns with a learning experience extending far beyond a typical dispensary role.
We are committed to providing competent and professional staff to service the community. With the number of pharmacists and range of experiences accessible within the group, potential
interns can rest assured that they will be adequately prepared for the rigors of their intern year.
Intern experiences will also be tailored to suit the applicant, so if specific areas such as business management, human resources, stock ordering and control take your fancy amongst many others, then becoming part of this growing independent group will allow you this exposure. Intern’s progress and experience is reviewed regularly, so if there are aspects of your practice that haven’t met your expectations, this can be addressed to ensure best outcomes.
Interns have the opportunity to practice in remote rural locations. Depending on need, interns may find themselves working with rural and indigenous health care specialists Maari Ma and the Royal Flying Doctor Service in these remote locations. These experiences are unique to the Outback Pharmacy Group and are possible because of the long-term community partnerships forged by the group.
We regularly conduct Public Health Campaigns and Community Health Education. The intern role will comprise responsibilities in this area and allow you to actively contribute to the community, whilst testing your skills as a professional. Potential interns will also have the opportunity to have their work published in local media. The Group also holds a strong relationship with the local University Department of Rural Health therefore interns may have the opportunity to contribute to peer-reviewed journals and ongoing research.
Under the recent changes in the 5th Community Pharmacy Agreement, pharmacies across the nation will need to increase their commitment to provision of professional services to remain sustainable. The team at Outback Pharmacy Group has not only accommodated for these
changes, but is leading the way, moving towards expansive roles for their pharmacist team.
It is very exciting times within the Group with new and growing industry and community partnerships emerging.
The Outback Pharmacy Group is a clear choice for interns that are interested in joining a rural pharmacy network that is committed to ensuring the success of its interns through the resources and skills that the group can draw on.
